What is mobile phone unlocking?

Mobile phone unlocking is the process of taking a phone which has been "locked" to a specific mobile phone network, and removing the 'restrictions', so that the phone can be used on any network (with any SIM card).

"GSM cell phones are designed to work with any service provider"

However some service providers 'lock' the phone they sell you, meaning if the phone is not unlocked, it can only be used on their particular network.

How do I know if my phone is locked?

Simply insert a SIM card into the phone, if it works it is unlocked. If the screen displays an error message such as "SIM card rejected", "Phone Restricted" or asks to enter a code other than the PIN code (ie "Enter NCK" or "Enter Subsidy Code") then it is locked.
What is GSM?

GSM is a type of digital mobile phone service. This is the network Vodafone operates on, and is also the most commonly used network worldwide.

Currently Telecom NZ operate on the CDMA network - However Telecom are currently building the necessary infrastructure to offer a GSM network within New Zealand.
Is unlocking illegal?
No, networks only lock phones to encourage you to remain on their network. Removing this lock is completely legal - You own your mobile after all!

Unblocking is illegal. This is the process of making a phone work again after it's been blocked by the mobile phone networks, most commonly as a result of the phone being reported lost or stolen. We do not offer this service.

What are the benefits of unlocking your phone?

Once your phone has been unlocked, it can be used all around the world with any SIM card.
Will unlocking my phone damage the phone?

No. All unlocking the phone does is remove the network lock and sim lock that are entered into the phones software when sold to you by a network provider.
